Geoffrey was one of the organisers of the inaugural Historical Materialism – East/Southeast Asia conference in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand, in July 2025. The conference brought together rigorous research in critical Marxist theory on topics such as capital, labor, finance, ecology, empire, authoritarianism, and social reproduction in East and Southeast Asia.

Geoffrey chaired the first panel of the conference, which included papers on labor dynamics in Thailand, socialist polemics in Asia’s long seventies, settler colonialism and counter-insurgency in Thailand, and ideological debates in Vietnam. The conference took place as a cluster within the larger Inter-Asia Cultural Studies (IACS) conference happening at the same time. Although this conference was the first-ever open-invite Historical Materialism conference focused on East and Southeast Asia, an earlier, closed-door Historical Materialism conference took place in Jakarta in 2023, providing the organizing nucleus for the conference in Thailand. Historical Materialism, more broadly, is a journal published four times per year. The Editorial Board also organises the annual HM conference in London, with affiliated networks organizing HM conferences elsewhere in the world.
